Help build a journalism fund to defend BC's environment

Rafe’s legacy

Politician, broadcaster, advocate, author, and contrarian, Rafe Mair has made an indelible mark on both the media world and those who fight on behalf of British Columbia’s environment. For over ten years, Rafe Mair was a columnist on The Tyee, where he was free to write about the things he cared about deeply. His loss is felt by many, and his contribution to the public conversation immense. The Rafe Mair Memorial Fund will continue his legacy and support the kind of hard-hitting reporting on British Columbian issues that Rafe cared deeply about.

How you can help

By contributing to The Rafe Mair Memorial Fund, you will be supporting original, in-depth reporting on environmental issues facing British Columbia. If you make a monthly contribution, we’ll be able to continue the fund and an annual fellowship for an emerging environmental reporter. And, you’re helping to keep others informed. We don’t put our articles behind paywalls, so your contribution helps to keep our stories open and available to everyone.

What the fund will do

All funds raised through the Rafe Mair Memorial Fund will go to paying for original reporting on environmental stories on The Tyee. Think Site C, wild salmon, oil pipelines, fracking. Every article supported by this fund will link to a page memorializing Rafe Mair’s fights and victories, with a list of donors (unless you choose to be anonymous). In addition, we’ll establish a reporting fellowship to pay an emerging environmental reporter to pursue a story, with mentorship and training from senior journalists and editors. The recipient of the fellowship will be chosen in consultation with the family of Rafe Mair.
